The quick version
- Gel is a flexible, glossy polish cured under a lamp. It looks natural, lasts around two to three weeks, and is gentle when removed properly.
- Shellac is a brand of gel-polish hybrid. It behaves much like gel, with a similar lifespan and a thin, natural finish.
- Dip uses a powder for a thicker, very durable finish that can last three to four weeks, though it is less flexible and removal takes longer.
How to choose
If you want a natural look and easy removal, gel is the go-to. If you are hard on your hands and want maximum durability, dip lasts a little longer. Whatever you choose, the key to healthy nails is proper application and gentle removal, which is where a trained nail tech makes the difference.
